After months of silence, Warner Bros. Discovery has officially confirmed that ‘The Batman 2’ will start filming in spring 2026, putting fans at ease following the movie’s repeated delays.
CEO David Zaslav broke the news in a shareholder letter, offering long-awaited updates on the DC franchise’s next phase, including several upcoming films and series under James Gunn’s leadership.
Production plans for ‘the batman 2’ finally revealed
‘The Batman 2’ — the sequel to Matt Reeves’ 2022 noir-inspired superhero hit — has been delayed three times, with its original release date pushed from October 2025 to 2026, and again to 2027.
Now, Warner Bros. has set the wheels in motion. In an official shareholder communication dated August 7, CEO David Zaslav confirmed that the film is “preparing to begin shooting next spring,” alongside other in-development DC titles.
This puts the film’s production start around March to May 2026, paving the way for its current 2027 theatrical release window.
Robert Pattinson and main cast returning
Despite the long wait, fans can expect the return of the original core cast:
Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman
Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman
Paul Dano as The Riddler
Colin Farrell as The Penguin
Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon
The film is once again helmed by Matt Reeves, whose gritty, detective-style vision for Gotham has been widely praised for its depth and darker tone.
Batman sequel part of james gunn’s larger DCU roadmap
The update comes as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s broader DC roadmap under co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.
In the same shareholder message, Zaslav highlighted that other DC projects in production include:
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2026)
Clayface (2026)
A new Wonder Woman film (release date TBD)
Zaslav described the DC universe as “one of the most valuable assets in entertainment,” with strategic plans to expand its reach across film, TV, games, merchandise, and live experiences.
The Batman universe continues to grow
While fans wait for the main sequel, the world of The Batman hasn’t stood still. Colin Farrell’s ‘The Penguin’ spinoff series is still moving forward on Max, expected to tie directly into the events of The Batman 2.
Matt Reeves has previously hinted at a larger “Batverse” in development — one that operates independently from James Gunn’s mainline DCU, allowing for deeper character arcs and standalone storytelling.
What’s next for Batman fans?
With a 2027 release still the goal, filming in 2026 offers a realistic timeline for post-production and marketing. Warner Bros. is expected to announce casting additions and plot details sometime in late 2025 or early 2026.
For now, fans can breathe a sigh of relief: ‘The Batman 2’ is officially moving forward.
