Actor Rajpal Yadav, best known for his comedy roles in Bollywood, has addressed his much-discussed legal case that briefly landed him in jail.
Speaking publicly for the first time in detail, he says the controversy surrounding him is being misunderstood and is “not as simple as money.”
Rajpal Yadav has once again spoken about the cheque bounce case that brought legal trouble and damaged his public image this year.
In a recent appearance on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, he pushed back against the belief that he avoided repaying money despite a long acting career.
He insisted that his imprisonment was not due to financial inability, but due to a broader dispute.
“Not about money,” Says Rajpal Yadav
The actor strongly rejected the idea that the case was only about Rs 5 crore.
He said, “That’s exactly the question… I was not jailed because I didn’t have money. It was about a larger issue and a matter of principle.”
According to him, if it had only been about Rs 5 crore, the matter would have been resolved back in 2012.
The case is linked to a loan taken for his film Ata Pata Laapata.
Yadav explained that the project failed commercially, which led to a financial dispute that escalated over time.
He claimed that what started as Rs 5 crore eventually turned into a much larger financial burden.
“Rs17 crore loss chain reaction,” actor claims
The actor further stated that the financial issue expanded significantly over the years.
He said, “Ye 5 crore ka masla hota to 2012 me nipat ta. Iss 5 crore ne 17 crore ko dubane ka kaam kiya hai.”
He also revealed that around Rs 12 crore had already been spent on the project, which eventually became a Rs 22 crore film.
Addressing claims of fraud, Rajpal Yadav said failure in films should not automatically be seen as wrongdoing.
He noted that in the film industry, many projects fail despite honest efforts.
“Out of 100 films, 20 work and 80 fail… If a film fails, it doesn’t mean fraud has been committed,” he said.
Despite the controversy, Yadav said he continues to trust the legal process and believes the matter will eventually be resolved.
He emphasized that the issue should be understood in full context rather than simplified narratives.
