Warner Bros. is taking high-budget TV production to an entirely new level with its upcoming Harry Potter reboot.
According to the British newspaper Express, the studio has committed a jaw-dropping $100 million to produce each episode of the series, making it the most expensive television show ever made.
Planned to span seven seasons, each with six episodes, the series’ total estimated budget stands at a massive $4.2 billion. This amount dwarfs previous big-budget shows like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which held the record until now with a per-episode cost of $62 million and a total cost slightly over $1 billion.
Why is it so expensive?
One of the key factors behind the sky-high budget is the construction of a massive custom-built set dubbed “Potterville” at Warner Bros. Studios. This miniature city replicates iconic locations such as Hogwarts, King’s Cross Station, and Privet Drive and is expected to be used not only for this series but for future Harry Potter-related productions. So far, $1.3 billion has already been spent on its development.
The series promises to explore J.K. Rowling’s original books in far greater detail than the previous films. Rowling herself is onboard as Executive Producer, ensuring the authenticity and essence of the beloved story remain intact.
Cast
The new series will feature a fresh cast of actors in iconic roles:
- John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
- Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall
- Papa Essiedu as Severus Snape
- Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
- Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell
- Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch
While a release date has yet to be confirmed, excitement is already building among fans, with the combination of a massive budget, detailed storytelling, and an impressive cast positioning the series to be a global phenomenon.
