Selena Gomez has spoken about quitting nicotine vaping, saying the habit changed her voice and that giving it up was difficult but worthwhile.
In an Instagram Stories video shared on Sunday, the singer and actress reflected on her experience and encouraged others struggling with nicotine dependence to keep trying.
“Nicotine is so hard to quit… It’s just not worth it,” Gomez said, adding that she believes the change in her voice may be lasting.
Her remarks have renewed online discussion about changes in her speaking voice, which fans have debated for years through clips from interviews and red-carpet appearances.
Gomez previously addressed questions about her voice
Gomez discussed the subject during an Instagram Live in December 2025, when she began responding to questions about her voice before stopping herself.
“So, sometimes when I’m on… never mind,” she said at the time, adding that there was “no excuse” and that she did not really care about the speculation.
She also mentioned that her throat sometimes swells internally and said she appreciated fans being candid with her.
However, Gomez has not publicly provided a specific medical explanation linking nicotine vaping to the changes in her voice. Her latest comments reflect her own understanding of the situation rather than a confirmed medical assessment.
No confirmed medical explanation
Some fans have speculated that Gomez’s voice changes could be connected to lupus, the autoimmune condition she has discussed publicly. The illness led to a kidney transplant in 2017.
Gomez has also spoken about the effects that medication for lupus and bipolar disorder has had on her body. However, she has not established a connection between these factors and the changes in her voice.
Her recent remarks do not confirm or rule out any medical explanation.
Nicotine dependence can make quitting difficult, and people who want to stop vaping can seek support from healthcare professionals or smoking-cessation services.
Gomez continues her work in music and beauty
Beyond her personal health comments, Gomez remains active in entertainment and business. She founded Rare Beauty and released the collaborative album I Said I Love You First with her husband, Benny Blanco, in March 2025.
Her latest comments have brought renewed attention to the challenges of quitting nicotine and the importance of avoiding assumptions about the medical causes of changes in a person’s voice.
