Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor has responded to the backlash over her role as Achiyamma in the sports drama ‘Peddi’, acknowledging concerns about the film’s portrayal of women and saying she could have done more to address them.
During an appearance on the latest episode of Koffee With Karan Season 9, host Karan Johar asked the Dhadak star how she had processed the criticism surrounding the film.
Kapoor said she had struggled with the controversy, particularly because of its potential impact on society and women.
“I feel many people worked really hard on that film and I really didn’t know if there was anything to say,” she said.
She added that the film’s narrative weighed heavily on her conscience because of its potential negative impact, particularly on women.
“That shame I will always carry with me. Could I have done more? Could I have been more vigilant? 100% yes. Was it problematic, was it extreme objectification? Yes. But the only thing I can do is ensure that it doesn’t happen again,” Kapoor said.
Camera angles spark criticism
Kapoor faced criticism for her portrayal of Achiyamma, with viewers questioning several sequences that focused heavily on her body rather than developing her character.
The controversy centred on concerns that the camera work objectified the actress and reinforced problematic portrayals of women on screen.
Director Buchi Babu Sana subsequently issued an apology on X, formerly Twitter, following concerns raised by audiences.
