Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan has recalled how her family reacted when she decided to live with Saif Ali Khan before marriage, saying the move raised eyebrows because of her background in the Kapoor family.
In a resurfaced interview, Kareena discussed the decision to move in with Saif while they were dating and explained why they chose to live together before tying the knot.
Speaking to Humans of Bombay in 2019, the actress said Saif had told her mother that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her and that they wanted to live together.
“We’d been dating for a while, when he said he’s not 25 and can’t keep dropping me home every night. So, he told my mom, ‘I want to spend the rest of my life with her. We want to live together.’ My mom was cool with it,” she recalled.
Kareena added that the decision to marry also felt natural to them.
‘There were some raised eyebrows’
In another conversation featured in Gunjan Jain’s book She Walks She Leads, Kareena said the decision had prompted mixed reactions within her family, particularly because she belonged to the Kapoor family.
“Saif and I moved in together because I was ready to leave my mother’s house, and if he and I did not live together, we would barely meet,” she said.
“There were some raised eyebrows, especially since I am from Kapoor khandaan. But I was always honest about it,” she added.
The actress said she saw living together as a way to understand their relationship better, questioning why they should not try something that could help them assess their compatibility.
“In Bollywood, the tried-and-tested formula always works, so why not try and test a relationship? I didn’t see anything wrong in it,” she said.
Kareena and Saif married in 2012
Kareena and Saif, who worked together in films including Tashan and Kurbaan, married in 2012.
The couple welcomed their first son, Taimur, in 2016, followed by their second son, Jeh, in 2021.
The resurfaced interview has drawn renewed attention ahead of the couple’s reported appearance in an upcoming episode of Koffee with Karan Season 9.
