Anne Hathaway has praised Tom Cruise’s new film Digger, describing the satirical comedy as “brilliant” in her first-ever review on the film-tracking platform Letterboxd.
The Verity star awarded the film five stars, calling it an ambitious and entertaining project and encouraging viewers to experience it for themselves.
“I loved this brilliant movie. It’s smart and trippy and aggressive and funny and ambitious,” Hathaway wrote.
“It’s worth making the time see and decide for yourself what you make of it. For me? 10/10,” she added.
Hathaway’s other Letterboxd favourites include Moonstruck, It Happened One Night, Mirror and Phantom Thread.
Tom Cruise plays an ageing oil magnate
Directed and written by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Digger stars Cruise as Digger Rockwell, an ageing oil magnate whose drilling operation triggers an ecological disaster.
Cruise also produced the film, which features an ensemble cast including Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Emma D’Arcy, Burn Gorman and Sophie Wilde.
The film’s storyline centres on the consequences of industrial activity, placing its central character at the heart of an environmental crisis.
Cruise expresses pride despite box-office performance
Despite the film’s reportedly disappointing box-office performance following its opening, Cruise has publicly defended the project and expressed pride in the work of its cast and crew.
In a post on Instagram, the actor thanked the artists involved in the production for their dedication and collaboration.
“I am so honored to have had the opportunity to create this film alongside such talented artists,” Cruise wrote.
He also praised the cast and crew for their “dedication, hard work, and joy”, describing the experience as “truly unforgettable”.
“I’m so proud of what we created,” he added.
Hathaway’s endorsement offers a positive assessment of the film as it seeks to attract audiences beyond its initial theatrical release.
