John Cena has opened up about his early Hollywood career, admitting that he “didn’t have” his heart in some of his first film projects.
The WWE star made the comments during an appearance on Today on Monday while promoting his upcoming film Matchbox the Movie, set to hit cinemas on October 9.
‘I didn’t have my heart into it’
Reflecting on his acting journey, which began in 2006, Cena said his transition from professional wrestling to Hollywood was not an overnight success.
“It’s been a long journey,” he said, adding that his early projects were not something he was fully committed to.
“Those early projects — truth be told — I didn’t have my heart into,” Cena said.
The actor explained that, as a young man, he was more comfortable performing in front of large wrestling crowds and travelling around the world.
“God, travelling the world, being out in front of tens of thousands of people every night going nuts and then doing it night after night, that’s where I wanted to be and that’s where I felt comfortable and fluent,” he said.
Cena admits Hollywood ‘ran’ him out
Cena said the slower pace of film production was difficult for him to understand at the time.
He described the environment on film sets as “super patient” and “super slow,” adding that he lacked the maturity and understanding needed to appreciate the process.
“I got ran out of the movie business for not caring and that’s justifiably so,” Cena said. “If you don’t care about something, give somebody the opportunity that does.”
However, the 49-year-old star said his attitude toward acting has changed significantly over the years.
“I’m now super passionate about what I do,” he said, adding that he feels fortunate to have been given a “second chance” in Hollywood.
“And that took 20 years to craft,” Cena said.
‘Every job is important’
Cena also said he has developed a greater appreciation for the creative process and the many people who contribute to a film.
“I understand that every job is important, that everyone is an artist and everyone needs to do their thing,” he said.
He specifically acknowledged the contributions of crew members, from caterers and grips to assistant directors, lighting teams and performers.
During the interview, co-host Craig Melvin also praised Cena for being self-aware.
Responding, Cena said reflecting on one’s strengths and weaknesses is important.
“I think there’s nothing wrong with taking inventory of yourself, looking in the mirror, loving yourself for your strengths and your flaws and trying to work to be better than you were yesterday,” he said.
Matchbox the Movie is scheduled for release on October 9, 2026.
