Taylor Swift has surprised fans by announcing a brand-new single, Patient Zero, which is scheduled to be released on Friday, September 25.
The announcement came on Tuesday, September 22, after the singer had sparked speculation among fans by sharing a series of Easter eggs hinting at an upcoming surprise.
Swift confirmed the news through her official Instagram account, saying she had been eagerly waiting to share the announcement with her fans.
“I’ve been impatiently waiting to tell you that my brand new single ‘Patient Zero’ will be out on September 25,” she wrote in the post.
The track is also available for pre-order on her official website for 24 hours.
Three collector’s editions
Alongside the announcement, Swift shared a new photograph of herself wearing a black backless dress with a high halter neckline.
Her website is also offering three collector’s edition CDs for a limited period, featuring the standard, acoustic and piano versions of Patient Zero.
Each edition comes with a double-sided cover featuring different images of the singer, with the CDs available for 24 hours or while supplies last.
New single arrives before MTV VMA honour
Swift’s new single will be released just two days before she is scheduled to receive a new honour at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.
MTV and CBS announced on September 21 that the 14-time Grammy winner will become the first recipient of the newly introduced MTV VMA Artist Director Award.
The honour recognises artists whose work behind the camera has contributed to music-video storytelling and who have developed a distinctive directorial voice.
Swift has directed or co-directed several of her music videos, including projects associated with her recent albums.
2026 MTV VMAs
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards are scheduled to take place live on Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The ceremony is scheduled for 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET, or 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. PT.
With Patient Zero arriving ahead of the ceremony, Swift is set for another major moment in a week that combines a new music release with recognition of her work as a director.
