Actor Aamir Khan is reportedly preparing to reprise his iconic role of Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chanchad in a sequel to the blockbuster film 3 Idiots.
The upcoming project is expected to reunite the original trio, including R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, more than a decade after the release of the 2009 classic.
According to a report by Hindustan Time, the sequel has already entered the pre-production phase.
A source close to the development claimed that Aamir Khan has started working on the project and is set to return as Rancho, the beloved engineering student who became one of Bollywood’s most memorable characters.
The insider also revealed that the original principal cast is expected to return for the sequel.
Will film be called ‘4 Idiots’?
The source further suggested that the new instalment could reportedly be titled 4 Idiots, with Vicky Kaushal potentially joining the cast as the additional “idiot.”
However, the report added that there is no official confirmation regarding Vicky Kaushal’s involvement or the film’s title at this stage.
Major time jump planned
One of the biggest reported twists in the sequel is a significant time jump.
According to the source, the characters will no longer be portrayed at the same age as they were in the original film. However, it remains unclear whether the story takes place before or after the events of 3 Idiots.
The insider added that only Aamir Khan currently knows how the timeline connects to the original story.
The sequel is also reportedly expected to bring back Rajkumar Hirani, who directed the original 2009 hit.
3 Idiots became one of the most influential films in Indian cinema, earning massive commercial success and critical acclaim for its commentary on the education system, friendship, and societal pressure.
