TikTok has introduced an ad-free subscription plan in the United Kingdom, priced at £3.99 (around $5.44) per month.
According to TechCrunch, the service is being rolled out over the coming months and will be available to users aged 18 and above. Subscribers will not see advertisements on the platform, and their data will not be used for advertising purposes.
The move is understood to be linked to the United Kingdom’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which restricts the use of personal data for advertising without user consent.
In a statement, TikTok’s UK managing director Kris Boger stated that choice for the community and growth for UK businesses go hand in hand on the platform. He added that advertising already supports British firms in reaching customers, increasing sales and creating employment, while the new ad-free option offers users greater control over their experience.
It is pertinent to note that TikTok began testing the ad-free subscription model in 2023. It remains unclear whether the service will be introduced in the United States.
