According to new details shared by Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station via Weibo, Apple is working on a variable-aperture camera for the iPhone 18 Pro series.
This feature is expected to debut on both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, marking a significant shift in smartphone photography.
In simple terms, variable aperture allows users to control how much light enters the camera sensor.
This could improve low-light photography, enhance background blur in portrait shots, and reduce overexposure in bright conditions. Instead of using physical controls like traditional cameras, users will likely adjust aperture through on-screen settings.
If implemented, this upgrade could bring DSLR-style flexibility to iPhones.
Users may be able to fine-tune depth of field and lighting conditions more precisely, making mobile photography more versatile in everyday scenarios.
More camera upgrades in development
Beyond variable aperture, the leak highlights three additional camera improvements Apple is reportedly working on.
The main camera could receive a much larger 1/1.12-inch sensor.

Apple is also said to be adding optical image stabilization (OIS) to the ultra-wide camera.
This could improve video stability, especially in Action mode, which currently relies heavily on electronic image stabilization (EIS).
Another major upgrade could be a 200-megapixel telephoto lens.
If introduced, this would significantly enhance zoom capabilities, putting Apple in direct competition with devices like the Find X9 Ultra and vivo X300 Ultra.
