Iran has confirmed its participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, putting to rest earlier uncertainty surrounding its involvement.
The announcement comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions with the United States.
The Iranian government has declared that its national football team is fully prepared to take part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Officials say all necessary arrangements have been completed to ensure the team’s participation.
This statement clarifies earlier conflicting reports, including remarks attributed to Iran’s Sports Minister suggesting possible non-participation.
Govt ensures full support for team
Speaking to state media, government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajrani said the Ministry of Sports and Youth has finalized preparations for the tournament.
She added that the team is being provided with all possible facilities to perform at its best on the global stage.
The confirmation comes at a sensitive time, as relations between Iran and the United States remain strained due to recent military clashes and broader Middle East tensions.
Iranian officials have described the current situation as a “third imposed war,” yet emphasized that sports participation will continue regardless of political challenges.
FIFA confirms Iran’s qualification
Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, recently confirmed that Iran has qualified and intends to compete in the tournament.
The 2026 edition of the World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This will mark Iran’s seventh appearance in the competition.
US President Donald Trump had earlier raised concerns regarding the security implications of Iran’s participation, particularly around the team’s arrival in the country.
Despite these concerns, Iran has reiterated that its players will compete with “national pride” and represent the country on the international stage.
The report also notes that a recent ceasefire, brokered with the help of Pakistan, has contributed to easing tensions. This development appears to have strengthened diplomatic momentum, making Iran’s participation more certain.
