Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Preview Builds 26100.8313 and 26200.8313 to the Release Preview Channel, reaffirming its commitment to integrating AI deeply into the operating system.
Despite earlier backlash, the company has clarified that it will not expand Copilot into basic apps such as Notepad, Snipping Tool, Photos, and Widgets. However, this does not indicate a slowdown in its broader AI strategy.
According to the latest release notes, Microsoft is continuing its plan to embed AI across Windows 11 by introducing “AI Agents” directly into the taskbar. These agents, such as Microsoft 365 Researcher, are designed to assist users with workflows by tracking progress and providing updates. Users will be able to monitor activity through the Microsoft 365 Copilot icon, and receive notifications when tasks or research reports are completed.
Unlike traditional assistants, these AI agents are capable of taking actions, not just answering queries. They can operate across multiple applications, summarize on-screen content, extract data, and automate various productivity tasks.
Microsoft also plans to open the system to third-party AI agents, allowing developers to build and integrate their own tools into the Windows ecosystem. These agents may interact directly with the desktop environment, expanding automation and productivity capabilities further.
The concept was first introduced in 2025 under the “Ask Copilot” taskbar initiative, and has now evolved into a more advanced system. The Microsoft 365 Researcher tool is part of the Microsoft 365 Copilot suite, meaning it requires a subscription to use. Users without Microsoft 365 access will not be able to utilize these features, and removing Copilot may also limit access to Microsoft’s AI-based tools within Windows.
