OpenAI has enabled image generation through ChatGPT directly within WhatsApp, eliminating the need to switch between apps or websites.
The feature, which became available in December 2024, was formally rolled out for all users on Monday, the company confirmed in a statement issued via its official handle on X (formerly Twitter).
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, said the new update allows users to generate AI images from within the WhatsApp chat interface by simply typing their instructions, marking a new step in the integration of generative AI tools into widely-used messaging platforms.
“This feature is now accessible to everyone using ChatGPT on WhatsApp,” the statement said.
ChatGPT, powered by OpenAI’s advanced artificial intelligence model, has seen rapid integration into various global platforms over the past year. It is already embedded in Microsoft’s Bing search engine and Apple’s iOS 18, with further expansions underway.
The image generation feature on WhatsApp functions similarly to the experience on the ChatGPT website or app. Users can begin by saving the number 1-800-242-8478 to their WhatsApp contacts. Alternatively, they can initiate a conversation via a shared link provided by OpenAI.
Once connected, users must link their OpenAI account to WhatsApp. After this one-time setup, they can generate images by sending written prompts — ranging from detailed scene descriptions to abstract concepts — to ChatGPT within the chat.
The company stated that this feature builds on the growing popularity of AI-generated visuals, which have become a mainstay in content creation, education, marketing, and entertainment industries.
Tech analysts say the integration of image creation into WhatsApp may signal a broader trend where AI tools become embedded into everyday digital communication platforms.
“This is more than just a novelty. It could change how people interact with AI daily — making it as simple as sending a message,” said a Lahore-based AI researcher.
While OpenAI has not specified whether voice instructions or Urdu-language prompts will be supported in the future, the current functionality represents a notable leap toward more intuitive AI accessibility.
The launch comes amid increased interest in generative AI across South Asia, particularly in Pakistan, where ChatGPT has become a go-to tool for students, content creators, and professionals alike.
Experts caution, however, that while the technology holds immense promise, its use must be governed by responsible practices and privacy awareness — especially within personal communication apps like WhatsApp.
