OpenAI may be preparing a new always-on ChatGPT assistant called “o”, after references to the unannounced feature briefly appeared online.
The company has not officially confirmed the product. However, users spotted a reference to “o, your always-on assistant” on what appeared to be a ChatGPT Pro subscription screen, alongside benefits including additional Work and Codex usage, maximum memory, 100GB of file storage and early access to new features.
Another reported configuration fragment contained display_name: "o" alongside an email_suffix: "-o". The latter has prompted speculation that the assistant could eventually have some form of email-related functionality or digital identity, although the configuration does not establish what the feature would actually do.
What could ‘o’ do?
The “always-on” description suggests a ChatGPT experience designed to remain involved in users’ tasks even when they are not actively chatting with it.
However, details about its capabilities, launch date, availability and pricing remain unconfirmed.
The reported email configuration has also led to speculation that “o” could interact with email, but there is currently no official information establishing that capability.
The leaks come as OpenAI and other major AI companies increasingly develop agents designed to perform tasks rather than simply respond to prompts.
DevDay could provide clues
OpenAI is scheduled to hold its annual DevDay 2026 in San Francisco on September 29.
The company says the event will feature an opening keynote from CEO Sam Altman, technical sessions, demonstrations and workshops focused on the tools its teams are building.
OpenAI has not listed “o” among the publicly announced DevDay features, so any connection between the reported assistant and the event remains speculative.
Still, the timing of the leaked references has fuelled expectations that OpenAI could reveal more about its plans for consumer-facing AI agents during the event.
‘o’ remains unconfirmed
The reported references provide indications that OpenAI may be testing an assistant under the name “o”, but they do not establish when or whether the product will launch publicly.
For now, OpenAI has not announced an “o” assistant or confirmed its proposed capabilities.
