Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said Wednesday that American voters had sent a “no to war” message through the midterm elections, following major Democratic gains in Congress.
“Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message,” Ghalibaf wrote on X.
He added that if the US government ignored public opinion to serve what he described as “international paymasters and blackmailers”, it would face consequences.
Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress in a sweeping midterm victory, delivering a setback to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
The election took place amid public dissatisfaction over the cost of living, tariffs and the US war against Iran, which has contributed to rising fuel prices.
Trump acknowledges Iran war’s impact
Trump also acknowledged that the conflict with Iran had played a role in the Republican Party’s poor performance.
“I think a part of it was Iran, but at the same time, people understood the importance of what I’ve done with Iran,” he told Fox News in a telephone interview on Tuesday.
The comments came as the war, triggered by US-Israeli strikes on Iran in February, remained at a stalemate after months of sporadic exchanges of fire.
