US President Donald Trump has said Iran wants the conflict to continue beyond the US midterm elections, but insisted that Tehran’s expectations would not be fulfilled as the war would end soon.
Speaking to reporters at the White House and addressing an election rally, Trump said preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remained his administration’s top priority. He also predicted a sharp decline in global oil prices once the conflict ends, while maintaining that the United States does not need assistance from other countries to deal with Iran.
Trump said the situation regarding Iran was progressing well, adding that the only major decision remaining was determining how Washington wanted to achieve victory.
“Everything is going very well regarding Iran,” Trump said, expressing confidence in the US position. He also said no decisive final step had yet been taken and that Washington would have to determine its next move.
The US president said his administration would deal with Iran either through a favourable resolution or a tougher approach. He reiterated that Iran would not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons under any circumstances.
Trump also claimed that Iran wanted the conflict to extend beyond the US midterm elections but insisted that this would not happen.
Oil prices expected to fall after conflict ends
Trump predicted that oil prices would drop sharply once the war with Iran comes to an end.
The remarks come amid concerns over the impact of the conflict on global energy markets. The prospect of an end to hostilities has become a key factor in expectations surrounding future oil prices.
Trump maintained that the United States had already achieved significant success in the conflict, even suggesting that Iran could withdraw from the war immediately without changing his assessment of the outcome.
Preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons
Trump stressed that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons was the central objective of the US campaign.
He described Iran as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism and argued that the cost of the conflict was negligible compared with the goal of preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
The US president also referred to Iran’s nuclear facilities, saying they were located deep beneath rock formations. He claimed that attacks on the facilities had left only rubble behind.
Trump said Washington’s objective extended well beyond the immediate conflict, insisting that Iran must remain unable to develop nuclear weapons even five, six or ten years from now.
He repeated that Iran would not be permitted to acquire nuclear weapons in the future, presenting the issue as a long-term security priority for the United States.
Trump warns Zelenskyy over Ukraine peace agreement
Turning to the war in Ukraine, Trump warned President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that failing to reach an agreement would have serious consequences.
The US president said Washington wanted a peace agreement soon and insisted that Ukraine must be willing to negotiate an end to the war.
“We have given a great deal to Ukraine, but received nothing in return,” Trump said, reiterating his criticism of US assistance to Kyiv.
He said he wanted to see an agreement reached to end the conflict and urged Zelenskyy to agree to a settlement. Trump warned that the situation would become “very bad” if the Ukrainian president failed to reach an agreement.
Trump says Russia also wants to end war
Trump also said Russia wanted to end the war following recent discussions concerning Ukraine. He did not provide further details of the discussions in the remarks cited.
The US president announced that his envoy, Steve Witkoff, was scheduled to travel to Russia the following day as diplomatic efforts continued.
Trump’s comments indicate that Washington is pursuing negotiations aimed at ending the war, while placing pressure on Ukraine to reach an agreement.
During his remarks, Trump also criticised the situation in France, describing it as very bad. He said he had previously advised France against allowing immigrants to enter the country.
