The Sindh government has reduced school hours by one hour from today, Education Minister Sardar Ali Shah announced, following requests from students to withdraw the additional hour added to the school schedule.
The minister said students had complained of feeling hungry because of the longer school timings, prompting the education department to restore shorter school hours.
Shah said the school hours had been extended by one hour to help complete the curriculum. However, students later requested that the additional hour be withdrawn, citing difficulties caused by the longer school day.
According to the education minister, students particularly complained of hunger after the increase in school hours. The Sindh Education Department has now reduced the timings by one hour with effect from today.
School hours extended after Covid-19 and floods
Shah explained that school hours had previously been extended by one hour due to disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic and floods.
The additional teaching time was introduced to help schools complete the curriculum and make up for lost academic time.
The minister also highlighted the ongoing rehabilitation of schools affected by floods across the province. He said rehabilitation work on flood-affected schools is currently underway, but more funds are needed to complete the process and restore the damaged educational facilities.
Additional development funds
Sardar Shah has called for additional funding from the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) in Islamabad to support the rehabilitation of flood-affected schools in Sindh.
He stressed the need for greater financial resources as the province continues work to rebuild and rehabilitate schools damaged by the floods.
