Instagram has introduced a new feature called “Instants,” designed for quick and unfiltered photo sharing with selected friends and followers.
The feature is launching both inside Instagram and through a separate companion app available on iOS and Android in select countries.
What is Instagram Instants?
Instants allows users to send spontaneous photos that disappear after being viewed. The feature focuses on casual and real-time sharing rather than heavily edited content.
Users can share Instants with close friends or followers they also follow back. Shared photos appear in a mini photo stack located in the bottom-right corner of the Instagram DM inbox.
Photos disappear after viewing
Unlike traditional Instagram posts or Stories, Instants are designed to vanish once viewed by recipients.
However, the photos are not permanently deleted for the sender. Instagram says Instants will remain stored in a private archive visible only to the creator for up to one year.
Users can later reshared archived Instants as Story recaps if they choose.
Replies go directly to DMs
Friends can react and reply to Instants, with responses automatically appearing inside Instagram direct messages.
Instagram is also adding an Undo option, allowing users to quickly take back a photo after sending it.
Instants are intentionally designed to feel more raw and authentic.
Users can add captions before sending a photo, but no additional editing tools or filters are available afterward. Unlike Stories, captions appear first before the image is opened.
Instagram says users will still have full control over who can receive each Instant.
The launch of Instants reflects a growing trend toward private and temporary social sharing, similar to features popularized by Snapchat and BeReal.
With disappearing content, direct messaging integration, and quick camera access through the companion app, Instagram appears to be expanding its focus beyond public posting and polished content creation.
