Apple has officially rolled out iOS 26.5 following months of beta testing, bringing several practical upgrades for iPhone users.
While the much-anticipated AI-powered Siri improvements are still delayed until iOS 27, the latest update focuses on messaging security, Maps enhancements, wearable compatibility, and critical security patches.
One of the biggest additions in iOS 26.5 is support for end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS messaging between iPhone and Android users.
The feature allows RCS texts exchanged across supported carriers to have security protections similar to Apple’s iMessage system. Messages protected by encryption are marked with a small lock icon in the Messages app.
Apple says encrypted RCS chats will gradually roll out depending on carrier support, and both sender and receiver must use carriers compatible with the latest RCS standard.
Users can also manage the feature through the Messages section in the Settings app, where encryption is enabled by default.
iOS 26.5 also introduces a new customizable Pride Luminance wallpaper.
The wallpaper includes multiple vibrant color options and expands Apple’s collection of dynamic Pride-themed personalization features for iPhone users.
Maps app gets smarter suggestions
Apple has updated the Maps app with a new “Suggested Places” feature.
The tool recommends destinations and locations based on recent searches as well as trending nearby spots, aiming to improve local discovery and navigation experiences.
To comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, Apple is opening more iPhone features to third-party wearable devices.
The update allows compatible earbuds, smartwatches, headphones, and TVs to access features previously limited to Apple devices like AirPods and Apple Watch.
Third-party earbuds can now support AirPods-style one-tap pairing.
Bringing compatible earbuds near an iPhone will trigger a quick pairing interface similar to Apple’s own ecosystem.
Third-party smartwatches are now able to receive and interact with iPhone notifications.
Previously, such accessories could only display read-only alerts, while interactive notification support remained exclusive to the Apple Watch.
Apple noted that notifications can only be forwarded to one connected wearable at a time.
Live Activities from the iPhone can also appear on compatible third-party wearables, expanding real-time tracking capabilities beyond Apple Watch.
However, accessory manufacturers will need to implement support for these interoperability features before they become widely available.
Apple clarified that these expanded capabilities are limited to users in the European Union with Apple accounts set to an EU region.
Easier iPhone-to-android transfers
Apple has also added new controls for users moving from iPhone to Android devices.
A new setting allows users to choose how many message attachments should transfer during migration, with options including:
- All attachments
- Attachments from the past year
- Attachments from the past 30 days
The Apple Books app contains references to upcoming award features, which may be tied to future reading summaries or year-end wrap-ups.
Meanwhile, iOS 26.5 introduces support for an Inuktitut keyboard layout, expanding language accessibility options.
Apple says iOS 26.5 patches over 50 vulnerabilities across the operating system.
Although none of the flaws are believed to have been actively exploited, the company recommends users update their devices as soon as possible to receive the latest security protections.
