Veteran Pakistani film director Syed Noor on Wednesday said Pakistan’s film industry cannot be revived in its traditional form, stressing that a new era must be shaped by the younger generation.
He was speaking at the opening ceremony of a two day film festival organized by the Punjab University Department of Film and Broadcasting. Punjab University Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ali inaugurated the festival.
The event was attended by renowned director Syed Noor, Chairperson of the Film and Broadcasting Department Prof Dr Lubna Zaheer, writer Amna Mufti, and a large number of students.
Addressing the gathering, Syed Noor said the old era of cinema has ended and the responsibility to build a new phase lies with the younger generation. He emphasized that students must have a clear understanding of the film industry.

He said films are based on imagination and creative storytelling, adding that international cinema explores a wide range of subjects, including unconventional themes. He encouraged students to make films themselves and said he was ready to provide guidance and resources.
‘Choorian’ director also highlighted the importance of using different lenses and technical tools in filmmaking. Expressing regret, he said many artists moved toward television instead of cinema.
He announced that he would award 200,000 rupees to the best film next year as an incentive for emerging filmmakers.

Punjab University Department of Film and Broadcasting led two-day film festival titled ‘Dekho Film Festival’ kicked off on Wednesday at Alhamra Arts Council, The Mall.
The festival will continue on Thursday (January 15).
The festival, themed ‘Narratives Beyond Borders’, aims to promote meaningful storytelling and creative expression through cinema. It will feature film screening sessions, panel discussions, workshops, music performances and a mushaira, according to details shared by the organizers.

Executive Director Lahore Arts Council Muhammad Nawaz Gondal said the festival reflects the evolving role of cinema as a platform not only for entertainment but also for social, cultural and intellectual dialogue.
He said the event is designed to provide professional exposure and learning opportunities for young filmmakers, students and cinema enthusiasts through interactive sessions and training workshops.
Gondal said Alhamra is making comprehensive arrangements to ensure the success of the event and expressed confidence that Dekho Film will serve as a milestone in promoting Pakistani cinema, nurturing emerging talent and strengthening creative expression.
PU Film and Broadcasting Department Prof Dr Lubnza Zaheer said a diverse range of films focusing on social, cultural and intellectual themes has been curated to engage audiences and encourage critical reflection and discussion.
The festival will screen films in multiple categories, including short films ranging from five to 30 minutes, documentaries of 10 to 20 minutes, and music videos. Cash prizes worth a total of Rs150,000 will be awarded.
