Lady Gaga has shared a candid account of her mental health struggles during her career peak, revealing that therapy, her fiancé, and medical treatment helped her navigate some of her darkest moments.
The 39-year-old singer also disclosed she even took lithium while filming A Star Is Born.
The singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, described a period of severe mental instability that forced her to cancel her Mayhem Ball world tour. Panic attacks became overwhelming, prompting her to seek professional help and step back from her demanding schedule.
“There was one day that my sister said to me, ‘I don’t see my sister anymore,’ and I canceled the tour,” Gaga recalled, highlighting how her health struggles affected both her personal and professional life.
Hospitalization and therapy
Gaga admitted there were moments when she feared she might not recover. “There was one day I went to the hospital for psychiatric care. I needed to take a break. I couldn’t do anything… I completely crashed. It was really scary. There was a time where I didn’t think I could get better… I feel really lucky to be alive,” she said.
The singer emphasized the importance of therapy and the support of her fiancé in helping her regain stability and manage her mental health challenges.
Lithium during A Star Is Born
Reflecting on her career milestones, Gaga revealed that her mental health struggles coincided with some of her biggest achievements. “I did A Star Is Born on lithium,” she confessed, describing the challenge of performing while managing panic attacks.
“I see all the fans and I’m in this big dress, and the music is so loud and it’s very dramatic… and for 90 seconds, I have to talk myself out of a panic attack,” the Oscar-nominated actress added.
