New heights and firsts
The eighth CIIE will feature 4,108 overseas exhibitors from 155 countries, regions and international organizations, with the total exhibition area exceeding 430,000 square meters, setting a new record in scale, said Vice Commerce Minister Sheng Qiuping at a press conference on October 28.
Enterprises from a total of 123 Belt and Road partner countries have confirmed their participation, up 23.1 percent year on year, Sheng added.
The event will see the debut of 461 new products, technologies and services.
The eighth CIIE will also feature a dedicated area for products from the least developed countries for the first time, promoting the use of “zero tariff” benefits by enterprises and products from all least developed countries that have established diplomatic relations with China, as well as 53 African countries. The number of African companies participating in the eighth CIIE will be up 80 percent on a yearly basis, Sheng said.
It will also introduce the “Cross-Border E-Commerce Preferred Platform” and the “Cross-Border E-Commerce Service Area” for the first time, creating special activities for e-commerce platforms and new retail channel operators.
This year’s CIIE will introduce new themes such as the silver economy, ice and snow economy, sports economy, and automotive tourism, alongside new platforms for digital and health consumption, Sheng said.
These efforts are designed to boost the consumption of goods and services and foster new forms of consumption, Sheng added.

More opportunities for multinational companies
Eight-time participant Siemens Healthineers will exhibit the ARTIS icono ceiling with Xpand, which represents the latest in image guided therapy technology.
“The first piece of equipment we brought into the venue this time is an ultra-fast spectral angiography system making its Asian debut. It’s used for the treatments of conditions like cardiovascular diseases and tumors, helping doctors perform diagnostics and treatments more accurately, completing ultra-clear minimally invasive at a sub-millimeter level,” Pu Zhengrong, vice president of Siemens Healthineers Greater China, said in an interview with Xinhua.
Grita Loebsack, member of the Executive Board of German consumer goods company Beiersdorf, told CGTN that “thanks to the platform that CIIE provided us, we were able to broadcast into, not just China, but beyond, the fact that we were successful in registering our product. It’s providing us a great platform. We’re very happy to have in Shanghai our second largest R&D center.”
