Afghanistan defeated Zimbabwe by 53 runs in the opening match of the three-match T20 International series at the Harare Sports Club on Wednesday, taking a 1–0 lead in the series.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Afghanistan posted 180 for six in their 20 overs. Opener Ibrahim Zadran led the charge with a fluent 52 off 33 balls, supported by Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s brisk 39 from 25. The pair set a solid foundation with a 76-run stand for the first wicket. Sediqullah Atal contributed 25, while Azmatullah Omarzai struck 27 from 21 deliveries. Shahidullah added a late flourish with an unbeaten 22 off 13 balls.
For Zimbabwe, Sikandar Raza was the standout bowler, claiming three wickets for 20 runs in his four overs. Blessing Muzarabani took two wickets for 41, and Brad Evans picked up one for 33.
In reply, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 127 in 16.1 overs. Their chase faltered early, losing five wickets inside the Powerplay. Brian Bennett scored with 24 off 15 balls, while Tinotenda Maposa added 32 from 15. Brad Evans contributed 24, and Tony Munyonga made 20, but none could build a lasting partnership.
Afghanistan’s bowlers maintained firm control throughout. Mujeeb Ur Rahman led the attack with four wickets for 20 runs, while Azmatullah Omarzai took three for 29. Abdollah Ahmadzai claimed two wickets for 20. Rashid Khan and Shahidullah also bowled economically to seal a comfortable victory.
Azmatullah Omarzai was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance.
With this win, Afghanistan lead the three-match T20I series 1–0. The teams will meet again at the same venue for the second match of the series.
