Astronomy enthusiasts in Pakistan have a celestial treat tonight as the first supermoon of 2025 lights up the night sky.
The moon will be closer to Earth than usual, appearing brighter and larger to the naked eye.
According to a spokesperson for Suparco (Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission), the supermoon will become visible at 8:47 pm, rising from the east shortly after sunset and setting in the west before sunrise.
What is a supermoon?
A supermoon occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its orbit, known as perigee. This proximity makes the full moon appear significantly larger and brighter than a regular full moon.
For tonight, the moon will be approximately 224,000 miles from Earth, making it 6.6% larger and 13% brighter than a normal full moon, according to SPARCO (Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission).
Visibility in Pakistan
The supermoon will rise from the east shortly after sunset and set in the west before sunrise, providing sky-watchers in Pakistan an excellent opportunity to enjoy the phenomenon.
Upcoming supermoons
This year, Pakistan will witness two more supermoons:
November 5, 2025: The brightest supermoon of the year.
December 5, 2025: The third and final supermoon of the year.
Astronomers advise sky-watchers to enjoy the view on clear nights, free from city light pollution, to fully appreciate the moon’s brilliance.
