The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has approved the use of the 6 GHz band (5925–6425 MHz) for Wi-Fi 7, paving the way for adopting the latest wireless technology in the country.
According to PTA, Wi-Fi 7 will deliver the fastest data rates in Pakistan, offering exceptional performance for high-resolution video streaming, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), and industrial automation.
The authority noted that Wi-Fi 7 will also reduce broadband costs, ease congestion on older spectrum bands, and strengthen network reliability. This means households, businesses, educational institutions, healthcare systems, and smart city projects will all benefit from the upgrade.
Early adoption in Asia-Pacific
With this approval, Pakistan becomes one of the early adopters of Wi-Fi 7 in the Asia-Pacific region.
PTA highlighted that the new technology will enable extremely high data speeds, minimal latency, and robust reliability—features required for 8K streaming and next-generation applications.
This comes after the earlier approval for Wi-Fi 6E, showcasing Pakistan’s steady progress toward advanced digital infrastructure.
Govt push for 5G rollout
The development aligns with the government’s broader digital transformation goals. On Tuesday, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, announced that Pakistan plans to roll out 5G services in seven major cities within months.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 26th ITCN Asia Expo in Karachi, the minister said measures were also underway to ensure more reliable internet nationwide.
Khawaja emphasized that IT would serve as the “core element” of the recently signed Pakistan-Saudi agreement, which is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and accelerate economic growth.
She further noted that Pakistan has moved away from fears of default, with inflation coming down and macroeconomic conditions stabilizing. “Karachi carries the weight of the country’s economic development,” she remarked.
