Google is preparing to expand its Gemini Live experience with a Google Maps-powered upgrade that overlays location details directly onto the camera viewfinder.
The feature, spotted in hidden code by Android Authority, could transform how users interact with the world around them.
The update would allow Gemini Live to display real-time Google Maps data—like business names, ratings, and landmarks—over what you’re seeing through your phone’s camera. For example, point your camera down a street and instantly see restaurant names and their reviews pop up on the screen.

This capability is similar to the augmented reality (AR) tools already found in Google Maps via Google Lens. However, integrating it into Gemini Live means users can also ask natural questions about what’s in front of them, combining AI-powered conversation with practical navigation.
Early tests show promise
Android Authority managed to activate the hidden feature in the latest Google app for Android. In its current form, the system is still basic but functional.

Users can also access Google Maps details in audio mode, though they must request information about specific places.
Potential for smart glasses
The AR-style overlay seems tailor-made for smart glasses. Imagine walking down the street and seeing a floating info card in your line of vision with directions or business details. With reports suggesting Samsung could release new smart glasses soon, such a feature could prove pivotal.
The Maps integration follows Google’s recent demo of visual guidance for Gemini Live at the Pixel 10 launch event. That feature highlights useful objects in a camera’s field of view—such as parking spots, tools, or buttons—further showing Google’s intent to merge AI and AR in practical ways.
