The Sindh government has decided to launch a new train service on a short route between Rohri and Karachi in a major step toward improving public transport.
The project is part of a broader plan to ease travel for millions and revive rail connectivity across the province.
The announcement came during a key meeting between Sindh Energy and Planning Minister Nasir Hussain Shah and a delegation from Pakistan Railways, where both sides agreed to collaborate on multiple railway development projects.
Rohri-Karachi track declared a priority
During the meeting, the new railway track from Rohri to Karachi was declared a priority project, with Nasir Shah terming it the “need of the hour.” He said the route would help reduce the burden on road transport and provide a reliable daily commute for millions.
Karachi-Sukkur suburban railway under review
The Karachi-Sukkur suburban railway project, based on Lahore’s urban rail model, is also under active consideration. According to the minister, the proposed service will operate between key cities, including Karachi, Rohri, and Sukkur, benefiting daily commuters and reducing pressure on intercity bus services.
Joint committee to resolve railway issues
To ensure smoother execution, it was agreed that a joint committee would be formed, comprising officials from the Sindh government and Pakistan Railways. This committee will propose practical solutions to technical and administrative hurdles, including station improvements, safety at level crossings, and the elimination of encroachments.
Minister Shah emphasized the importance of cleanliness, beautification, and the creation of green belts around railway stations. He also encouraged the adoption of stations by the private sector through public-private partnerships.
Sindh vows full support for ML-1 and KCR
The Sindh government reiterated its commitment to the Main Line-1 (ML-1) project and highlighted that work on the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) has already been completed from its end. However, the minister criticized the railway authorities for delaying progress by halting encroachment removal operations without explanation.
Public interest is top priority: Nasir Shah
“We are ready to cooperate with every institution in the public interest,” said Nasir Hussain Shah, underlining the province’s focus on infrastructure development, transport efficiency, and commuter relief.
He concluded that the suburban rail service will serve millions of people daily and ease transportation challenges across Sindh.
