The ongoing spell of monsoon rains across Pakistan is expected to persist for another two days, according to the Meteorological Department. As the country braces for more wet weather, authorities have issued alerts for potential urban and riverine flooding in several regions.
Meteorological Department Deputy Director Irfan Virk told that July witnessed 25% more rainfall than average across the country. However, the province of Sindh recorded lower-than-normal rainfall during this period.
Looking ahead, Irfan Virk warned that August is also likely to experience above-average rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding in urban centers and along major rivers.
PDMA issues flood alert in Punjab
Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued flood alerts for several rivers in Punjab, including the Chenab and Jhelum, where a moderate flood situation is anticipated between July 30 and 31.
According to a PDMA spokesperson, water levels are expected to rise in rivers adjacent to Ravi, while the Sutlej River at Ganda Singh is forecast to see a significant increase in flow within the next 24 hours.
Urban flooding risk in major cities
The PDMA has also warned of urban flooding in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, and Lahore over the next 48 hours due to heavy downpours. Authorities have placed commissioners of Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, and Sahiwal divisions on high alert.
The Punjab relief commissioner has directed all relevant departments to remain vigilant and ready to respond to any emergencies that may arise from the expected heavy rainfall and rising water levels.
