The federal government has approved a tax exemption on the import of 500,000 tonnes of sugar, following a record surge in sugar prices.
According to details, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has issued a notification granting tax relief to the private sector on sugar imported up until 30 September 2025.
According to the notification, the sales tax on imported sugar has been reduced from 18% to 0.25%, while the 3% value-added tax has also been waived.
This decision came after the large-scale export of sugar, which led to a rise in domestic prices. The government was now attempting to address the resulting shortage through increased imports.
