Several areas of the metropolis received moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder on Friday night, providing relief from the prevailing heat but also triggering widespread power outages across the city.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the weather is expected to remain cloudy with chances of more rain over the next two days.
The late-night downpour turned Karachi’s weather pleasant, while intermittent showers were reported in Malir, Airport, Model Colony, Korangi, Nazimabad, Surjani Town, and along the Super Highway.
The highest recorded rainfall was in Gulshan-e-Hadeed, where 17 millimetres of rain was measured.
Other areas also received significant rainfall, with 12mm reported along Shahra-e-Faisal, 9mm in the old city areas, 7.8mm in Defence Phase II, 5mm at Jinnah International Airport, and 2mm on University Road.
The first rain of the monsoon season, however, exposed the city’s fragile infrastructure, causing a major power breakdown across large parts of Karachi. Residents from various localities complained of prolonged power outages, with many saying they spent the night without electricity.
A spokesperson for K-Electric, the city’s sole power distributor, said that electricity supply was affected in several areas due to rain-related faults. “Power has been restored to nearly 90 percent of affected areas,” the spokesperson claimed on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, the PMD has advised citizens to remain cautious during the expected rainfall spell and warned of possible urban flooding in low-lying areas.
