China’s top political advisor Wang Huning on Sunday called for greater unity and peaceful development across the Taiwan Straits, emphasizing the unbreakable ties between compatriots on both sides and the unstoppable trend of national reunification.
Wang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks while addressing the 17th Straits Forum held in Xiamen, a coastal city in east China’s Fujian Province.
He called on compatriots across the Taiwan Straits to seize the historic opportunity of national rejuvenation, enhance a keen sense of identity of the Chinese nation, and work together to protect Chinese culture, safeguard peace and advance the cause of national reunification.
Noting that 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s recovery, Wang said the recovery of Taiwan is a shared national memory for people on both sides of the Straits, stressing the importance of remembering history and preserving the fruits of victory.
Both sides of the Taiwan Straits belong to one China, he said, emphasizing the importance of upholding the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus. He called for resolute opposition to “Taiwan independence” separatist activities and external interference, emphasizing the need to jointly safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits.
He also urged joint efforts to uphold peace, protect the shared home of the Chinese nation, and steadfastly advance national reunification.
Wang stressed the importance of viewing cross-Straits relations from the perspective of the Chinese nation’s overall interests and long-term development.
“We stand firmly as a strong supporter of our Taiwan compatriots, “Wang said and urged efforts to enhance cross-Straits integration. “We will continue to respect, care for, and deliver real benefits to Taiwan compatriots, especially the youth, so they gain a stronger sense of fulfillment, happiness, and belonging,” he added.
Wang encouraged young people across the Straits to strengthen their confidence and pride in being Chinese, and to contribute to national rejuvenation.
Ma Ying-jeou, former chairman of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party, also addressed the forum, stressing that the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations is the shared aspiration of people on both sides. He called for deeper exchanges and cooperation under the common political foundation of upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposition to “Taiwan independence.”
The Straits Forum, now in its 17th edition, aims at expanding people-to-people exchanges and deepening integrated development across the Taiwan Straits. This year, more than 7,000 people from all walks of life in Taiwan participated in the forum.
