Apple is gearing up to unveil a major user interface redesign called “Liquid Glass,” according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
The new design language will feature “sheen and see-through visuals of a glassy surface”, incorporating “transparency and shine effects” throughout toolbars, app interfaces, and system controls. It’s also rare for Apple to make such a drastic change to its UI.
While the changes may appear superficial, they mark the first significant UI overhaul since the introduction of iOS 7, when Apple shifted away from its iconic skeumorphism design in favour of a more minimal aesthetic.
Gurman suggests that Liquid Glass may debut in time for the 20th anniversary of the iPhone next year. The commemorative iPhone is rumoured to feature curved glass sides around the entire phone as well as edges, ultra-slim bezels, and a display free from notches or cutouts, aligning with Apple’s new visual direction.
The redesign is also expected to take cues from the Apple Vision Pro, aiming to create a cohesive user experience across Apple’s ecosystem. The new Liquid Glass look will reportedly extend across iOS 26, macOS, watchOS, iPadOS, and tvOS, providing a unified aesthetic.
Apple is likely to showcase the Liquid Glass UI during WWDC 2025, which begins on June 9 at 1PM ET / 10AM PT.
