Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday directed authorities to reduce the price of roti across the province, in line with the recent decline in flour prices.
Chairing a high-level meeting on commodity prices, the Punjab CM ordered the Price Control Department to take immediate steps to revise roti rates and ensure that the benefit of reduced flour costs reaches the common people without delay.
“The new price of bread must reflect the reduction in flour prices,” she said. “I want the roti to become more affordable for every household. The benefit of this price cut must go directly to the people.”
Vowing to bring the cost of bread to “the lowest level in history,” Maryam Nawaz emphasized that food inflation disproportionately affects the poor and must be tackled with urgency.
The chief minister also instructed officials to keep a vigilant eye on the prices of essential food items, particularly chicken, vegetables, and pulses.
Expressing concern over the rising cost of poultry, she remarked, “The child of the poor used to eat chicken once a week. If chicken becomes expensive, the poor won’t be able to afford even that — I will not tolerate this at all.”
Officials were further directed to intensify monitoring efforts in markets and take strict action against hoarders and profiteers.
The Punjab CM reiterated that her administration is committed to protecting vulnerable segments of society from the burden of food inflation.
