The intensity of heat in Karachi is expected to rise further today, with the mercury likely to touch 40 degrees Celsius, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Monday.
According to the Met Office, the weather in the port city will remain “extremely hot and humid”, exacerbating the discomfort for residents. Humidity levels are also forecast to remain high, which would result in the temperature being felt significantly higher than what the thermometer indicates.
On Saturday, the maximum temperature in Karachi was recorded at 37.6°C. However, due to elevated humidity, the heat index — or the ‘feels-like’ temperature — was reported to be 6 to 8 degrees higher.
Meteorologists have warned that the prevailing weather conditions could pose serious health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing medical conditions. Citizens have been advised to remain indoors during peak hours, stay hydrated, and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun.
Authorities are also urged to take precautionary measures and ensure availability of water and medical assistance at public places, especially during the afternoon hours when the heat tends to be most intense.
