ISLAMABAD (DI NEWS) : A delegation of media representatives and parliamentarians, arranged by the Understanding China Forum, recently visited the Karot Hydropower Project, a flagship initiative under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The project, located on the Jhelum River, is a testament to the robust partnership between Pakistan and China and their shared commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.
The delegation was briefed on the project’s significance, which includes generating 720 MW of clean electricity annually and contributing 3,206 GWh to Pakistan’s national grid. They also observed its role in mitigating climate change by offsetting approximately 3.5 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
During the visit, the delegation was impressed by the project’s sophisticated design, operational efficiency, and its substantial impact on the local community. The Karot Hydropower Project has created over 4,500 jobs during its construction phase, with priority given to local employment, boosting economic activity in the region. In addition, the project has undertaken various Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives that have transformed the lives of nearby communities. These include the establishment of schools, healthcare facilities, and vocational training programs, as well as the development of essential infrastructure such as roads and water supply systems. The delegation expressed their appreciation for these efforts, commending the project for not only addressing Pakistan’s energy challenges but also fostering socio-economic development.
The visit underscored the strength of Pakistan-China collaboration, which has paved the way for transformative projects like Karot Hydropower. Delegates noted that the project stands as a shining example of how mutual cooperation and innovation can lead to sustainable progress. A spokesperson for the Karot Hydropower Project highlighted that the initiative reflects a broader vision of empowering communities and supporting a green energy future, emphasizing its critical role in addressing energy shortages, combating climate change, and improving the quality of life for the local population.
