BEIJING: China said Monday that Iran’s decision to name Mojtaba Khamenei as its new supreme leader following the killing of his father was a domestic matter, and it opposed any attempt to target him. Israel’s military has threatened to target any successor to former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed over a week ago in a first wave of US and Israeli strikes on Iran. China’s foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told reporters on Monday that Iran’s decision to appoint the younger Khamenei was “based on its constitution”. “China opposes interference in other countries’ internal affairs under any pretext, and Iran’s sovereignty,…

TEHRAN : Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran’s late supreme leader, has been named his successor, Iranian state TV announced early Monday, as the war that began with his father’s killing less than two weeks ago took a dramatic turn. The younger Khamenei had long been considered a contender for the post, even before an Israeli strike killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and despite never being elected or appointed to a government position. The post-midnight announcement came after signs of a rift among Iranian officials as the country awaited a decision by the 88-seat Assembly of Experts, a group of clerics…
Oil prices surged about 20% on Monday, hitting their highest since July 2022, as the expanding US-Israeli war with Iran led some major Middle Eastern oil producers to cut supplies amid fears of prolonged disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz chokepoint. Iraq and Kuwait have begun cutting oil output, adding to earlier liquefied natural gas reductions from Qatar, as the war blocked shipments from the Middle East. Analysts predict the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia will have to also cut output soon as they run out of oil storage. The war could leave consumers and businesses worldwide…

Residents of Tehran woke up on Sunday morning to find it was still dark outside, an apocalyptic sight created by thick black smoke billowing from oil depots hit by Israeli strikes.
