Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry has said that Pakistan has placed no restriction on Iran joining the Makkah Defence Alliance.
In an interview with Reuters, the military spokesperson said any decision to send additional Pakistani troops to Saudi Arabia would depend on the prevailing situation and the decision of the political leadership.
He said any country wishing to join the Makkah alliance would be welcome, adding that the decision must be taken by all three parties.
The ISPR chief said the alliance supported collective defence and regional peace, and any country sharing these objectives could join.
On the conflict in Yemen, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said it was an internal matter and Pakistan was not involved in it. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the defence of Saudi Arabia and the holy sites.
He said Pakistan was cautiously optimistic about mediation between Iran and the United States. He warned that powerful elements were working to undermine the mediation efforts.
