Meta’s new AI app, Muse, is gaining users faster than ChatGPT did during the early days of its mobile launch, according to estimates from mobile analytics firm Apptopia.
Muse recorded 1.8 million iOS downloads in the US and Canada during its first 12 days, compared with 1.3 million for ChatGPT over the same period, Apptopia found.
The comparison covers only the US and Canada to account for differences in the two apps’ launch strategies.
Muse records stronger early downloads
ChatGPT launched globally on iOS when its mobile app debuted, while Muse is available on both iOS and Android but is currently limited to users in the US and Canada.
To create a closer comparison, Apptopia examined iOS data from the two markets during the first 12 days after each app launched.
On that basis, Muse had about 1.8 million downloads, compared with 1.3 million for ChatGPT.
Apptopia also estimated that Muse had reached 2.8 million installs globally during its first 12 days.
The app has continued to climb Apple’s US App Store rankings, moving from No. 2 shortly after launch to No. 1. Separate estimates from Appfigures had previously put Muse above 1 million downloads.
Muse also leads in daily active users
Muse is also showing stronger early engagement based on Apptopia’s estimates.
In the US, Muse had about 642,000 daily active mobile users, compared with 231,000 for ChatGPT at a comparable point following its launch.
Even when the comparison was narrowed to iOS, where both apps can be directly compared, Muse remained ahead with an estimated 359,000 daily active users.
The figures are estimates rather than official user numbers. Apptopia does not have access to Meta’s internal data, meaning the actual number of downloads and active users could differ.
Meta’s wider ecosystem could boost Muse
Meta has several established platforms that could help drive adoption of Muse, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
The company used extensive cross-promotion and integration across its platforms when it launched Threads, which has since grown to more than 500 million monthly users, according to Meta.
Muse can connect with Facebook and Instagram and also works within WhatsApp, giving Meta multiple channels through which to promote the AI service.
Apptopia’s estimates indicate that more than 95% of Muse users are also Facebook users, while about 63% use Instagram.
Meta has yet to release official figures
Despite Muse’s early movement in app rankings, Meta has not publicly disclosed detailed figures for the app’s adoption.
The early estimates suggest strong initial interest, but longer-term performance will depend on whether Muse can retain users beyond its launch period and expand its reach.
For now, Apptopia’s data provides an early snapshot of Muse’s performance rather than a definitive measure of its long-term position in the mobile AI market.
