Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and first foldable iPhone Duo target premium smartphone buyers, but the two devices take very different approaches.
The iPhone Duo offers a foldable design, Apple Pencil support and new multitasking features, while the iPhone 18 Pro focuses on performance, cameras, battery life and a more familiar iPhone experience.
For buyers deciding between the two, several factors could make the iPhone 18 Pro a more practical choice.
1. The iPhone 18 Pro is considerably cheaper
Price is one of the biggest differences between the two models.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 with 256GB of storage, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 with the same 256GB capacity.
That means buyers could opt for a 1TB iPhone 18 Pro for $1,799 or a 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max for $1,899 and still spend less than they would on the entry-level foldable.
The price gap becomes even more significant for users who need additional storage, with higher-capacity versions of the iPhone Duo potentially costing more than $3,000.
2. Pro models offer a more advanced camera system
For photography and video enthusiasts, the iPhone 18 Pro models have a significant advantage on paper.
The iPhone Duo features a 12MP Center Stage front camera, compared with an 18MP front camera on the iPhone 18 Pro.
The Pro models also feature larger camera sensors, a variable-aperture main camera and a 48MP telephoto camera with up to 8x optical zoom and up to 40x digital zoom.
Apple has also introduced additional Pro camera controls on the iPhone 18 Pro models, giving users more control over photography and video capture.
Another feature exclusive to the Pro models is Apple’s Reference Image protocol, which is designed to provide information about an image’s authenticity and whether it has been modified using AI.
3. The iPhone 18 Pro Max offers longer battery life
Battery life is another area where the Pro lineup has an edge.
Apple claims the iPhone 18 Pro Max can deliver up to 45 hours of video playback. The iPhone Duo is rated for up to 44 hours using its outer display, but that figure drops to 31 hours when using its larger internal screen.
For streamed video playback, Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro Max at up to 40 hours compared with up to 37 hours for the Duo.
The Pro models also support faster charging, reaching up to 50% in around 15 minutes with a compatible 60W-capable adapter and USB-C cable. The Duo takes around 20 minutes under similar conditions, according to Apple.
Real-world battery performance, however, will depend on usage and independent testing.
4. Face ID remains available
The iPhone 18 Pro retains Face ID, while the iPhone Duo uses Touch ID built into its power button.
Face ID has been a standard biometric authentication system on Apple’s flagship iPhones since the iPhone X.
Touch ID remains familiar to Apple users, but buyers who prefer facial authentication may find Face ID more convenient on the Pro models.
Apple Watch users can also use their nearby authenticated watch as an alternative unlocking method with the iPhone Duo.
5. The Pro offers a more familiar iPhone experience
The iPhone Duo introduces a completely different way of using an iPhone.
Its foldable design enables multitasking, Apple Pencil support and different orientations and camera angles. Those features could appeal to users looking for a more flexible mobile experience.
However, the iPhone 18 Pro retains the traditional iPhone form factor and familiar software experience.
For buyers who do not need a folding display or the additional multitasking features, the Pro models could offer a simpler transition from an older iPhone.
Which iPhone should you buy?
There is no universal winner between the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo.
The Duo is aimed at buyers who value its foldable design and new ways of interacting with the device. The iPhone 18 Pro, meanwhile, offers a lower entry price, a more advanced camera system, longer claimed battery life on the Pro Max and Face ID.
