The National Disaster Management Authority has warned of a possible flood situation in the upper parts of the country from today until June 15 due to expected rainfall.
According to the NDMA spokesperson, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir may face local flooding as rains could cause rivers, streams and canals in hilly areas to overflow.
The NDMA said flood-like conditions may develop in several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the rainy spell. The areas at risk include Chitral, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram and Mansehra.
The spokesperson warned that heavy rainfall in mountainous areas could increase water flow in rivers and streams, creating difficulties for people living near low-lying areas and water channels.
Azad Kashmir placed on alert
Local flooding may also occur in several areas of Azad Kashmir. According to the NDMA, Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Bagh and Rawalakot could be affected by rain-related flooding.
Residents have been advised to remain alert and avoid unnecessary movement near rivers, nullahs and low-lying areas.
Gilgit-Baltistan also faces flood threat
The NDMA spokesperson said rivers and canals in Gilgit-Baltistan may also witness a flood situation due to rainfall. Areas including Gopis-Yasin, Ghizer, Diamer, Tangir, Darel and Gilgit have been identified as vulnerable during the current weather spell.
Authorities have urged citizens in these regions to take precautionary measures and follow instructions issued by local administrations.
The NDMA has advised citizens living near rivers and low-lying areas to take immediate precautionary steps. Tourists and travellers have also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the rainy period, especially in mountainous and flood-prone areas.
The warning comes as the northern regions of the country continue to attract tourists during the summer season.
Order to remain ready
The NDMA has directed district administrations and relief agencies to remain on high alert.
Emergency teams and dewatering machinery have been instructed to remain ready to respond quickly in case of flooding or rain-related emergencies.
The authority said precautionary steps are essential to protect lives and reduce the impact of possible flooding in vulnerable areas.
