According to reports, Apple could change its traditional launch strategy for the iPhone 18 series.
While the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and Apple’s first foldable iPhone are expected to debut in September 2026, the standard iPhone 18 may not arrive until spring 2027. It could launch alongside the iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air.
Although Apple has not officially confirmed these plans, the reported delay could leave many consumers waiting several extra months for the entry-level model.
iPhone 17 offers rare value
The iPhone 17 stands out as one of the most feature-rich standard iPhones Apple has released.
Starting at $799, the device retains the same launch price as its predecessor while doubling the base storage to 256GB. It also brings several features that were once exclusive to Pro models.
Among the biggest upgrades are a 6.3-inch display with a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate, Always-On Display support and peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits.
Premium features without the pro price
The standard iPhone 17 is powered by Apple’s A19 chip and includes dual 48-megapixel rear cameras.
It also features the same 18-megapixel front-facing camera found on the Pro models, along with improved battery life and faster 40W wired charging.
These upgrades have significantly narrowed the gap between the standard and Pro versions of the iPhone.
What could the iPhone 18 bring?
Rumors suggest the iPhone 18 could feature Apple’s next-generation 2-nanometer A20 processor, 12GB of RAM and a new C2 modem.
The device may also receive updated Samsung camera sensors, a brighter display and a smaller Dynamic Island.
However, analysts expect the overall design to remain largely similar to the iPhone 17, meaning the year-to-year changes may be relatively modest compared to the jump from iPhone 16 to iPhone 17.

The smartphone industry continues to face higher component costs due to increasing demand for memory and storage chips driven by the artificial intelligence boom.

Consumers seeking a lower-priced iPhone can also consider the iPhone 17e or iPhone 16.
The $599 iPhone 17e includes the A19 chip, 256GB of storage, improved battery life and stronger Ceramic Shield protection. However, it features a single rear camera and slower MagSafe charging.
Meanwhile, the $699 iPhone 16 offers dual rear cameras, faster wireless charging and a Dynamic Island display, making it another attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

For users who need a new smartphone today, waiting until 2027 for the standard iPhone 18 may not make much sense. The iPhone 17 already delivers many premium features at no additional cost, while the expected upgrades in the iPhone 18 appear incremental based on current rumors.
