The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has highlighted critical water shortages in Balochistan, where only 7 percent of land is currently under cultivation.
In response, a digital water and weather monitoring system has been launched to help farmers manage scarce resources more efficiently.
ADB has set up automatic weather stations across the province to provide precise data on rainfall, temperature, and wind speed. This information allows farmers to plan irrigation schedules more effectively, reducing water loss and enhancing crop yields.
With the digital system, Balochistan can now predict floods and droughts in advance. This early warning capability helps the government distribute water fairly and ensures better management across the province’s agricultural sector.
Training local communities
ADB has conducted training programs to empower local people to operate and maintain these systems independently. This initiative has improved coordination and planning among various departments, enhancing the overall efficiency of water use.
Construction of new dams and river systems has significantly increased water availability for irrigation. Additionally, solar-powered drip irrigation systems are being implemented to save water and provide stability in agriculture across the region.
