ISLAMABAD (DI NEWS) : All future construction in Pakistan will now be carried out under the Green Building Code – a decision taken under the vision of the Prime Minister and the leadership of Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, Prof. Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhary, to align the country’s construction sector with global standards of environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, water conservation, and the use of renewable materials.
Addressing the “Pakistan Green Buildings Session” held in Islamabad in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Federal Minister for Planning said that under the URAAN Pakistan framework, the government has made it mandatory for all future development projects to incorporate green construction and environmental sustainability, so that Pakistan’s infrastructure becomes greener, stronger, and more environmentally friendly.
Prof. Ahsan Iqbal stated that the implementation of the Green Building Code will ensure energy conservation, efficient water use, promotion of renewable materials, and reduction of construction waste in all public sector projects.
He emphasized that sustainable development is no longer an optional element – it is now a fundamental prerequisite for survival and competitiveness. The government, he added, has moved from reactive responses to environmental threats toward climate-smart planning as part of a proactive national strategy.
The Federal Minister urged development partners, local development authorities, and private sector developers to integrate green standards and international best practices into their projects, stressing that environmental responsibility is not solely the government’s duty but a shared national obligation.
Prof. Ahsan Iqbal further noted that the Planning Commission, through the implementation of the Green Building Code, has opened a new chapter in Pakistan’s journey toward sustainable development and climate resilience.
In conclusion, the Minister called upon experts and development partners to provide practical recommendations that could help design policy incentive
