All Senate candidates from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been elected unopposed after the ruling party and the opposition reached a political understanding.
The development comes after the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) managed to resolve internal rifts with its disgruntled candidates who have now formally withdrawn their nomination papers.
Party insiders confirmed that a consensus was achieved following several rounds of negotiations between PTI’s central leadership and disgruntled party members.
According to political sources, the final list of candidates was approved by PTI’s political committee, which chose to retain the previously nominated individuals.
“There will be no polling for the Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” a source familiar with the matter said, adding that “the entire process is now a result of mutual consent between the treasury and the opposition benches.”
Under the agreement, six of the eleven Senate seats from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will go to the PTI, while the remaining five have been allocated to the opposition parties.
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) will each secure two seats, whereas the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is expected to clinch one.
Prominent PTI figures set to enter the upper house include Murad Saeed, Faisal Javed, Mirza Khan Afridi, and Pir Noorul Haq Qadri, all of whom were endorsed as candidates in the official party declaration.
Azam Khan Swati has been nominated for the technocrat seat, while Taimur Khan Jhagra’s name did not appear on the final list, contrary to earlier speculation.
Additionally, a woman candidate will be fielded for the reserved seat, while Mashaal Yousafzai has been named to fill the seat vacated by Dr Sania Nishtar.
