Police personnel thwarted a terrorist attack on the Gambila Police Station in Lakki Marwat on Saturday night, forcing the assailants to flee after a swift and preemptive response based on thermal surveillance.
According to police sources, security personnel monitoring thermal cameras detected suspicious movement near the police station and promptly opened fire, preventing the attackers from taking up positions. No casualties were reported among the security personnel.
The Inspector General of Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Zulfiqar Hameed, along with RPO Bannu, commended the Lakki Marwat police for their vigilance, courage, and swift action that averted a potentially deadly assault.
A spokesperson for the police said that an investigation had been launched, and search operations were under way in nearby areas to track down the fleeing militants and locate any suspected hideouts.
This attempted attack comes amid a recent surge in militant violence across the country.
Earlier the same day, nine bodies of kidnapped bus passengers were recovered in Balochistan’s mountainous region, following a spate of insurgent attacks on passenger buses in the province.
The victims, labourers travelling in two buses, were abducted on Thursday evening and later found shot dead, according to Balochistan government spokesman Shahid Rind.
The banned Baloch Liberation Front (BLF) claimed responsibility for the killings, accusing the victims of spying for Pakistani intelligence agencies. Rind said security forces had thwarted three other attacks earlier that day and accused India of supporting such militant activities.
The spike in violence has triggered alarm among law enforcement agencies, especially in the wake of Pakistan’s recent military operations along the western and eastern borders.
In a high-level meeting on Friday, the country’s military leadership reaffirmed its commitment to decisive action against foreign-backed proxies and terror outfits operating within Pakistan, vowing “holistic action at all levels” to safeguard national security.
