Pakistan and the United Kingdom have launched a new round of development talks after an eight-year gap, marking a major step toward strengthening economic cooperation, trade, investment, and education ties between the two countries.
The fresh round of Pakistan–UK development talks comes after eight years and is being viewed as a significant reset in bilateral engagement. Both sides expressed optimism that cooperation in trade, investment, and education will expand further in the coming period.
The talks aim to build on recent progress and unlock new opportunities for sustainable economic growth.
Focus on economic cooperation
An important meeting was held between Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and British Minister for Development Affairs Baroness Chapman. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, environmental initiatives, and social sectors.
Both leaders emphasized the need to deepen collaboration to support long-term development goals.
Trade, investment ties show strong growth
During the talks, it was highlighted that economic relations between Pakistan and the UK have seen significant improvement due to the efforts of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC). Officials shared that the number of British companies operating in Pakistan has now increased to more than 200.
This growth has pushed bilateral trade volume to over £5.5 billion, reflecting rising investor confidence and stronger commercial links.
Pak-UK Education Gateway
Baroness Chapman, along with Federal Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, inaugurated the next phase of the Pak-UK Education Gateway. The new phase includes the launch of a start-up fund, online learning programs, and an expansion of educational opportunities.
The initiative is designed to strengthen academic collaboration and skills development between the two countries.
In addition to trade and education, both sides discussed increased investment in health, education, population welfare, and environmental protection. These sectors were identified as key areas for long-term partnership.
Green Compact Program launched
As part of Pak-UK cooperation on environment and climate action, the Green Compact Program was launched. The program focuses on collaboration in environmental protection, natural resource management, and green technologies.
The initiative reflects a joint effort to address climate challenges while promoting sustainable economic practices.
