At Gamescom 2025, US-based studio Saber Interactive unveiled Turok: Origins, a reboot of the classic dinosaur-hunting series that first gained fame on the Nintendo 64 in the 1990s.
The new game promises both single-player and multiplayer modes, blending survival against dinosaurs and aliens with modern cinematic gameplay.
First appearing as a comic book hero in the 1950s, Turok became a household name among gamers in the late ’90s. The early Turok titles on Nintendo 64 were beloved for their prehistoric settings and innovative first-person combat, but the franchise faded after a poorly received 2008 reboot.
Now, Saber Interactive — known for reviving dormant franchises like Evil Dead and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine — has taken on the challenge of restoring Turok’s legacy.
Turok: Origins brings dinosaurs and aliens together
Studio head Jesus Iglesias said Universal Studios, the company behind the Jurassic Park films, approached Saber in 2020 to breathe new life into the brand.
The result is Turok: Origins, a third-person shooter that combines dinosaur survival with alien combat, evoking elements of both Jurassic Park and Predator.
“We are being respectful with the originals, especially Turok 1 and Turok 2, and also adding elements that make the universe more consistent,” Iglesias told AFP.
Modern gameplay with classic roots
At its development peak, Turok: Origins had more than 250 people working on it. The game is designed for today’s audiences with fluid movement, cinematic combat, and multiplayer options to battle AI-driven enemies.
Iglesias stressed that unlike the 2008 reboot — widely criticized as a misstep — Origins aims to honor the series’ roots while updating the experience for modern consoles.
While the game drew major attention at Gamescom, Saber has not yet announced an official release date. What is confirmed is that Turok: Origins will launch on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
For fans of dinosaur-hunting shooters, this marks a long-awaited revival of one of gaming’s most iconic franchises.
