The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen said it intercepted and destroyed a drone over Saudi Arabia’s oil-rich Eastern Region, as cross-border attacks involving Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group continue.
The coalition later said it had also intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by the Houthis towards the kingdom’s Southern Region.
The developments come as the conflict involving the coalition, which backs Yemen’s internationally recognised government, and the Houthis, who control the capital Sanaa, intensifies amid the US-Israeli war on Iran.
Saudi Arabia’s oil infrastructure faces repeated attacks
The Eastern Region is a key economic centre for Saudi Arabia, holding most of the kingdom’s oil and gas reserves. It is also home to the headquarters of state-owned oil giant Saudi Aramco.
The region has faced multiple attacks in recent weeks. Aramco’s headquarters reportedly suffered extensive damage in an attack earlier in October.
Houthis deny attacks near holy cities
On Friday, the Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by the Houthis over the Medina region.
The Houthis denied carrying out an attack on Friday.
Medina is home to one of Islam’s holiest sites and attracts millions of Muslim pilgrims every year.
